St Michael’s Church in Aldbourne, Wiltshire is seeking funding or sponsorship to enable it to install some much needed radiators in the old building.

The church community believes that people are being put off the winter services by the chill, and a warm radiator system would turn this around. They are currently seeking some £75,000 to fit a modern central heating system, with £15,000 already raised by parishioners following a series of concerts, fêtes and church tower tours. They have spent this on a new boiler and are now seeking additional funds for a radiator system under the pews themselves.

Friends of St Michael’s spokesman Mike Hellier told the local paper: “We are trying to raise money for a new heating system so folk will feel more inclined to come to church when it’s cold in the winter. The church is very beautiful but it gets very cold because it is so old.

“We fundraise through the year so we can maintain the fabric of the church and the heating is something that we have wanted to address for some years. We’ve already managed to replace the boiler and you can notice a difference, but the choir still have to keep their coats and scarves on when they rehearse.”
