Britons need to make better use of energy-efficient gadgets such as radiator boosters in order to cut hundreds of pounds from their heating bills, according to switching service uSwitch.

The service said that more than 11 million households – some 43 per cent of those in the UK – are failing to scoop these savings by not making energy-efficiency a priority. If they were to do so, making maximum savings from their boilers and radiators, they could save up to £530 every year. By failing to do so, Britain collectively pays nearly £6 billion a year on its energy bills than are necessary.

USwitch said that increasing energy prices and other strains on the household budget have driven some 26 per cent of households to take energy-efficient measures, 42 per cent are dissuaded by the initial expense and 17 per cent have yet to appreciate the savings that can be made.

Some of the energy-saving measures it recommends include home insulation, gadgets such as energy monitors and radiator boosters – all of which can make great financial savings with only a small initial investment.

USwitch energy-efficiency expert Kevin Sears commented: “With winter starting to bite, and recent energy price cuts not going far enough, becoming more energy efficient may be the lifeline cash-strapped consumers need.”

“By spending just £25 on energy efficiency measures such as a radiator booster, households could cut their bills by up to £140.”

He added: “Energy efficiency can be as simple as turning things off when they are not in use or using a standby saver, while using gadgets such as energy monitors or radiator boosters could save you up to almost £200 a year.”
